The Holy Trinity of Pop Are Winning 2017, No Question

Evidence speaks louder than your opinions, I’m afraid. When we look at the overall domination of the discourse of pop culture, Black Women have come through with the finest finesse of fashion, art and culture. But the most notable are three women crowned as the Holy Trinity by Tumblr users some odd years ago. It might only be barely turning into the early holiday season, but the sheer cultural and creative discussion in the media of the works by Rihanna, Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj definitely reveals a collective domination of the year – despite the mainstream’s refusal to acknowledge this domination.

Earlier this year, the Queen Bey, Beyoncé herself welcomed two Gemini heirs into her kingdom. Sir and Rumi were welcomed into the world, joining the generation of Carters preceded by the notorious Blue Ivy Carter. Despite her pregnancy, Beyoncé not only assisted in the remix of “Mi Gente,” which donated proceeds to Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, but she released the spontaneous visual album, LEMONADE. The album was largely celebrated as one of the greatest collection of art and narrative in years, revolutionizing Beyoncé’s growth as an artist and musician. Despite this, the 59th Grammy Awards still egregiously selected Adele’s 25 for Album of the Year. Anyway, the best revenge is your paper, as Beyoncé closed November surpassing Taylor Swift as the Highest Paid Female Musician.

Not to be defeated by her sisters amongst the Holy Trinity of Pop, Nicki Minaj celebrates four additions to her long list of dynamic features including Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish,” Migos’ “Motorsport” alongside rising fellow female rapper, Cardi B and Farruko’s “Krippy Kush (Remix)” alongside 21 Savage and Rvssian. In each installment, Nicki Minaj maintains superiority and flow greater than the combined sum of 2017’s Freshmen Class – and for great reason: Nicki Minaj is a master of her unique style. Earlier in the year, Nicki Minaj committed numerous scholarship pursuits by paying off the Tuition fees and loans for 30 fans and revealing numerous donations to an Indian village. Despite her widely publicized rap beefs and scrutiny, Nicki Minaj performance for the culture and cultivation of brand remains, as always, illustrious. With an album on the way, we can only expect greater things in the coming year.

Black women are extraordinary and worthy of praise. The combined accomplishments of this Holy Trinity continue to impress not only us, but the peers whom hope to stand equal to their individual acclaim. Let’s take the time to celebrate these Black Queens.

Similarly, Rihanna epitomized the silent-yet-deadly power moves this year, crossing from style icon and hip-hop-pop powerhouse into a mogul. This year, Rihanna released the acclaimed cosmetic line, Fenty, which has been celebrated as the most diverse and lush inventions for black and brown women. Simultaneously, Rihanna released Fenty x Puma, a collection of female active, leisure and luxury footwear and clothing. Never limited by the capitalist rat race, Rihanna was also named “Humanitarian of the Year” by the Harvard Foundation. Regardless of the expectations thrust onto her for the uninvited title of “Sex Symbol,” Rihanna confidently displays a business acumen worthy of GQ MAGAZINE’s first-ever female “Man of the Year”.
