Drake's Ode to Phenomenal Women: Karena Evans, Yara Shahidi & More

It started with Drake's "God's Plan" visuals then his "Nice for What" music video. What do both have in common? Women. Powerful women.


And then there was Karena Evans. Drake tapped the 22-year old filmmaker to direct "God's Plan" and "Nice for What." Known as the first lady of Popp Rok, Karena is becoming one of the most sought after producers. She has many titles under her belt as a director, actress and writer. She began her rise to stardom as an intern under veteran music director, Director X and is now his protégé. Her authentic and cinematic style has led her to work on Drake's "God's Plan" and "Nice For What." As the first women to receive the Prism Prize's Lipsett Award, one of the highest music video honors in the country, we know this strong Black women has more dopeness coming our way.


Not only was Drake's most recent visuals directed by a women, but "Nice For What" was for women and featured many of Hollywood's biggest stars as well. Actresses Tiffany Haddish, Yara Shahidi, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Letitia Wright, Michelle Rodriguez, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rashida Jones and Emma Roberts along with singer Syd and ballet star Misty Copeland and Drake himself all stood out in the dope cinematography for the hit single. 

Karena Evans and Drake were able to capture the individual personalities of each woman involved while maintaining a girl power image. The visuals played well with a sampled beat from Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor."
