How Queen Naija Turned Heartbreak Into a Record Deal
YouTube vlogger Queen Naija is hitting up the airwaves with her single “Medicine,” an R&B ballad about getting revenge on a cheating lover. It checks off all the boxes for a hit: smooth beat, her angelic voice, and relatable lyrics. So relatable because it’s based on a true story.
Last year, Queen Naija discovered her ex-husband Chris Sails cheated on her. It was highly publicized because the two are known vloggers on Youtube. There were screenshots and videos confirming he was unfaithful in the marriage.
The duo started dating in 2013 and began their YouTube channel “Chris and Queen” two years after. They were “relationship goals” y’all. They would be seen in their videos smiling and enjoying life together with their three-year-old son, Chris Jr.
But we’ve all heard the saying, “All that glitters is not gold.” Behind the 20- minute videos of laughing, kissing, and fun pranks, they were having relationship issues leading to Chris’ infidelity.
With the hurt, humiliation, and disbelief that her husband cheated on her, Queen needed an outlet to express her feelings on the situation.“Medicine” was a release for Queen and a way to address the break-up.
Music was always a passion for her but she left it on the back burner for years as the couple’s Youtube channel took off. Writing “Medicine” was a way for Queen to tap back into her creativity and sing like she used to. In 2014, she auditioned for American Idol and made it to the top 50, so you know she has talent!
Queen released “Medicine” on New Years Eve. Within two weeks, the video had two million views. The lyrics hit home for not only Queen but many ladies who have been in her shoes:
“How would you like it if I do the things you do. Put you on do not disturb and entertain these dudes.” // “Don’t get it twisted, I could play this game too, how would you like it if I did the same to you, yeah.”
After the single dropped, Queen had all the major record labels wanting to meet with her. She went to meeting after meeting and as luck would have it, the meeting with Capitol Records happened unexpectedly. You see, they were not on her list of record labels to meet with.
Queen had connections to meet with No ID, famous music producer for Jay-Z, Kanye West, Common, and more and they met up for lunch. He liked Queen and decided to schedule an immediate meeting with the staff at Capitol Records.
Within 24 hours, the meeting was scheduled and Queen walked through the doors of the Capitol building.
When she met the team, she instantly had a good feeling.
“Although it was last minute... I just felt home when I walked in,” Queen stated in an interview with DJ Smallz.
When you know, you know right?
After the meeting with Capitol, it was a no brainer for Queen to sign with them. She signed on the dotted line and as they say “the rest is history.” She joins label mates Migos, Corrine Bailey Rae, and Sam Smith. Imagine her collaborating with Migos? That would be fire!
When it was time to tell her supporters who she signed with, she took to Instagram to deliver the exciting news. She penned a heartfelt post to her 3.6 million followers (and counting) to officially announce she signed to Capitol Records.
“First of all, I want to give ALL THE GLORY AND HONOR TO JESUS!!!,” Queen began. “I promise to make good music that will touch souls and encourage people and lead them in the right direction, I promise to always be ME...”
With a great song, the video has to be on point as well. Queen released the music video for “Medicine” and she did not disappoint. She had a look- a- like to play her ex-husband Chris. Queen even had her rumored new boo, Clarence star in the music video as the man she would seek revenge on her ex with.
Dare I say “Spicy!” (Queen is managed by Spicy Management)
“Medicine” has 39 million views and counting and is currently # 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 R&B songs. Queen will be releasing her first EP in July so be ready for love tunes galore!
Ladies and gentlemen, you see the best revenge is not doing what the person did to you (although it’s tempting) but moving forward and focusing on yourself. And if you’re Queen it’s scoring a record deal with one of the top labels in the world. Oh yeah that’s how you truly give someone a taste of their own medicine.
