Song of The Summer
Music is always better in the summertime. I am willing to argue this fact. There's something about listening to a song while on vacation or any event like brunch or a day party, that just makes it better. blasting it through your radio speakers in your car with your windows down as you drive. Laying on the beach and hearing it as you achieve maximum levels of relaxation. Plus, artists usually push out hit-worthy material during this particular season. This summer was no different, as some songs got played so much, it was physically impossible to escape them. Here's a run down of my picks for the top 5 songs of the summer, including one picked by our readers on Instagram!
5. "Apesh*t" by The Carters
Though their debut album received mixed reviews, the Carters definitely got it right with this song. not only did fans get new music from Bey, but they also got the chance to hear her rap. Additionally, their music video located in the Louvre, grabbed the world's attention. The Migos influence certified it as a bop regardless, as the rap-trio knows what sound it takes to make a chart-topping hit. Whether or not you are a fan of the new sound, we can all agree that she absolutely killed her verses and the song has been on repeat all summer long.
4. "God's Plan" by Drake
There can be no discussion of summer songs without the 6 God himself. Drake is the same artist that gave us "Controlla" and "One Dance" in the same summer. This move affirmed as the king of the summer when it comes to music. His music is always catchy and the vibes he provide are always right. Though Drake's album, Scorpion, was much more somber than anyone could've anticipated, his single, "God's Plan" has continued to make waves this summer thanks partly to the high amount of radio play.
3. "I Like It" by Cardi B
This song proves that, once again, the Latin American market should not be overlooked. "Despacito" hit us this lesson last year, and here we are learning it once again. Cardi B's career has continued to skyrocket, even after he debut album, Invasion of Privacy, confirmed that she was a forced to be reckoned with back in April. Though the song was released in the Spring, the song screams summer vibes. The song features Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny and Colombian artist J Balvin, and can be considered Latin-trap as it included verses in Spanish. Nonetheless, I, along with the other non-Spanish singers, sing along with no idea of what we are saying.
2. "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai
This, perhaps, is one of the most unexpected songs to make the list this year. This hit is the debut commercial single by English singer Ella Mai and was released in February of last year. It was on the trackless of her third EP entitled Ready, the song stayed under the radar until a year later when she released the music video. I believe that social media and radio playtime factored in the sudden rise of the song which could've easily gotten this amount of attention when it originally came out. The song became an anthem of sorts and launched Ella Mai into the spotlight of mainstream R&B.
1. "In My Feelings" by Drake [FAN PICK]
This selection should be of little surprise to anyone, especially those who voted for it on Instagram! This was the one song of the summer that could not be escaped, no matter how hard you tried. Thanks to New York comedian, Shaggy, #TheShiggyChallenge became a viral sensation, spreading across social media like wildfire. The song has remained on the charts since celebrities and children began recording themselves doing the challenge and Shiggy began doing press. Drake then released the video for the song which included Shiggy and a list of other celebrities. It's completely natural to feel tired of this song, but it's hard to admit that this song didn't have an impact on this summer. Check out the video below!
